Other Exciting Changes:

  • The Equinox Expo schedule and location will be moving away from CitySpace ........coming home to the School.

    • We have more freedom, more parking, more private spaces for practitioners and speakers to work their magic, and much more room overall to make for a larger-than-ever community experience......

  • and to accommodate all this energy, we have decided that there is no better time than the Lions Gate portal of 08/08!

More information will be forthcoming, and we are working on the possibility of holding a smaller event on the March equinox day, but for now, expect one big, yearly combined expo in the summer under the benevolent eye of Regulus............ Mark Your Calendars!

  • Jodi and Dr. Kay are honored and thrilled to announce that we have recently joined forces with  Adam Butler, a ground-breaking philosopher and author best known for Butler’s DMT Field Guide. and for his teachings which emphasize that both nature and the human body already contain the tools for profound inner awakening and activating neuroplasticity. We are currently collaborating on joint projects to support humanity struggling through spiritual awakening, identity collapse and dark night of the soul, in a multi-disciplinary, multi-dimensional way that provides something for everyone.

The Archetype of The Holly King

Sacred Holly Tree: The Guardian That Holds the Balance Between Light and Dark

January has arrived, wrapped up in its cultural contradictions. We grew up listening to teachings about the "new year" and new resolutions; fresh starts and forward motion...and yet the land itself sits silent and still here in the West. The Great Wheel has turned, and the light is slowly returning, but it has not yet asserted itself. The world outside our windows is quiet, guarded, and unresolved...dormant. Ancient cultures understood this tension well. They did not rush the winter; they honored it and accepted the gifts that it brings.

This is where holly enters the story.

Long before it was turned into decoration, holly was recognized as a guardian tree, appearing precisely when clarity mattered more than comfort. Ever green in the bleak deadness of winter, sharply thorned rather than soft, marked with red berries signaling both life and warning; holly stands at the threshold between light and dark and refuses to romanticize either. It does not promise easy renewal.....it promises survival with integrity.

To understand holly is to understand January itself…not as a beginning, or a time of expansion, but as a season of containment and protection.. A season of discernment. A time when the most sacred work is not an outer focus on growth, but of inner work and protection.

Holly is one of the most misunderstood of all the sacred trees in our collective awareness. It appears everywhere during winter, yet very little of its original meaning survives beneath the decoration. Holly was never a symbol of cheer.... it was a symbol of guardianship.

Vibrantly green against the backdrop of barren forest, bristling with protective thorns and marked with red like drops of blood, holly embodies a truth that was understood very well by ancient cultures. Survival is not passive, and protection is not fear-based. Holly stands firmly against indiscriminate invitations;. it decides what may enter....and what may not.

In Celtic and Druidic tradition, holly is associated with winter sovereignty and the figure of the Holly King, ruler of the waning year. The true meaning of this ancient story is of balance, and of timing; Sovereign Stewardship. It is not of a moral battle; the interpretation of "good versus evil" has been a persistent misinterpretation of the myth.

  • The Oak King is ruler of the waxing year; the expansive Jupiterian expression of the Green Man that is a familiar symbol of nature and Earth in her seasons of growth and plenty.

  • The Holly King is the Green Man in his season of protection and inner focus. Both archetypes are necessary. When growth would be reckless, restraint governs. When light cannot yet expand, it must be preserved. Holly does not create light. It guards the ember.in ancient hearth traditions and winter rites.

During the darkest months, the sacred task was not in maintaining a brilliant display, rather it was preservation of life sustaining warmth. Someone stayed awake. Someone tended the fire quietly. Someone made sure the flame never went out. This necessity has been mirrored in countless traditions that have come to us down through the ages in the stories of the Eternal Flame.

  • Holly carries this same intelligence in plant form. Life condenses, and energy withdraws; protecting the inner spark of real life and shielding it from display.

  • The thorns of holly reveal a deeper teaching; a boundary marker. A thorn is not aggression; it does not chase or attack, it maintains the sanctuary within. Holly teaches consent as a spiritual law, not an emotional reaction. Nothing may cross a threshold without permission, without clarity.. This is why holly has always been placed at thresholds; doorways and liminal spaces. It speaks a language that humans never stop needing.

Later Christian symbolism absorbed holly into its winter imagery, associating its sharp leaves with the crown of thorns and its red berries with sacrificial blood. While this reframing has blunted holly’s warrior edge, the truths of endurance through suffering, protection of life during harsh conditions, and the willingness to hold fast rather than flee remain at its core.

Something rarely recognized is that holly also carries a masculine archetype often missing from modern spiritual conversation. Winter is associated with the Crone, the elder feminine who governs endings, truth, and dissolution. The Holly King stands beside her as the winter form of the Divine Father, not as creator or conqueror, but as guardian. While the Crone clears what must fall away, holly is the living hedge of protection for what must survive. Together, they hold the balance between dark and light. January is not asking us to rush forward. It is asking us to tend what matters. To establish boundaries where clarity is required. To guard the ember of truth until the season turns.

  • Holly reminds us that not all power shines, not all love is soft, and not all protection looks gentle. Some forms of care are fierce, quiet, and uncompromising. And sometimes, survival itself is the sacred work.

  • There are seasons when life slows everything down at once… motivation dissolves, projects linger without closure, plans keep getting postponed, and forward motion feels strangely stalled, no matter how much effort you apply.

This energy of stagnation carries its own wisdom. It shows up when the old ways of moving forward can no longer support you in your most authentic expression of self.  The Soul responds; putting up roadblocks, and asking for patience rather than force.

  • Beneath the frustration, a quiet current is moving. Priorities are being stripped to their essentials, habits of over-extension are being interrupted, and a deeper orientation is forming. The waiting feels uncomfortable because it interrupts momentum, and yet this pause is where clarity is forged.

When movement returns, it does so with direction, steadiness, and a new sense of right timing that cannot be manufactured ahead of its arrival..And so, if you feel currently "stuck", unable to hold onto the old fire of action or even to muster up motivation to keep trying to move forward, have hope. There is a message here for you from spirit, and when you call upon the ancient wisdom and patience of the Sacred Holly branch, you will find clarity of your right path once more when the time is right.
