A Shared Passage Through the Dark Night
There have been many seasons in history when the ground beneath humanity has shifted so suddenly that it has felt as though the whole world has lost its footing. We are in such a time right now. All across continents and cultures, voices are rising. People are gathering. Shock and confusion is rippling through the collective. Ancient structures buried deep under Earth's surface are coming to light. Truths long hidden are surfacing. Old frameworks are cracking under the weight of new realities.
You are not imagining it.And you are not alone.
This is not just a political or social moment, or even an environmental moment , although it encompasses all these things.It is a human moment. The turbulence in the outer world reflects a deeper transformation in the inner world of our collective being. We are in the midst of a shared Dark Night of the Soul, where both personal and societal illusions are stripped away, leaving us with the essence of what matters. Sometimes just what that is is not so obvious, especially when the accepted values of society as a whole have shifted from the natural, human-centered values that sustain us body, mind and soul and into the unnatural and artificial.
In such unsettled times, the pull toward isolation can be strong. Yet what heals us; what steadies us, is remembering that we are part of the same human family. The grief, confusion, and uncertainty that each individual soul feels is mirrored in the hearts of millions. Our shared experience is the thread that can keep us connected when everything else feels uncertain.
The Power of Community: Reaching for Each Other
In the absence of familiar landmarks, we can create new ones together. This is a time to:
Gather together; whether in living rooms, community spaces, online circles, or under the open sky.
Speak, and listen; share your fears and your hopes; hear the same in others.
Be the Witness; allow each person’s story to stand without fixing or judging.
Ritual as an Anchor
Rituals give form to what is often difficult to put into words or even to fully understand; they help us to honor the experience and give us an outlet to feel what we feel. They can be as complicated as we want, and they can be as simple as:
Lighting a candle on a certain night each week with friends or family, and with each member of the group naming something that they are grateful for.
Sharing a meal where everyone tells a story from their week.
Standing barefoot on the earth at sunrise or sunset, imagining roots connecting you to the millions of other people everywhere, all doing the same.
Singing, drumming, or praying together in a group....or alone! Sound and rhythm are ancient medicine that have been practiced by indigenous people for as long as humans have been on Earth.
These acts are not small. They are the quiet architecture of resilience.
We may not know what the world will look like when we emerge from this passage, but we can choose how we travel along it; together, grounded, hand in hand, walking each other home.
No night lasts forever. The dark night is always followed by dawn. And when the first light returns, it will shine on the faces of those who stayed the course with open hearts, unshaken in their shared humanity.
